About Opportunity Funds Program (OFP)

For the past 1 decade, the US Embassy through its EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program has been helping talented low-income Nigeria walk through the hassle of seeking admission into the United States Universities and Colleges.

The aim of the Opportunity Funds Program is to widen outreach to youth and underserved students in Nigeria.

 

It is important to note that the OFP is not the organization that will fund your scholarship. What they do is assist you in negotiating and financing the admissions process for colleges and universities in the United States.

 

However, you must be highly talented, determined, and economically disadvantaged for you to be considered. Accordingly, you must work hard to apply to U.S. institutions that can provide full funding for your schooling.

What the Opportunity Funds Program (OFP) Covers

The Opportunity Funds Program (OFP) is not responsible for paying your tuition. The following are what they cover:

 

  • Upfront costs of applying to U.S. institutions.

 

  • Cost of taking standardized tests

 

  • Application fees (limited amount)

 

  • International passport

 

  • A flight ticket to the U.S

 

  • Visa and SEVIS fees

 

  • Also, a settling-in allowance if available.

 

In some circumstances and if funds permit, they may also cover the cost of a credential evaluation, mailing transcripts and I-20 forms or additional score reports, and internet data. However, you will receive this if only they are operating virtually with you.

 

The good thing about the OFP is that they do not just provide you with application funding. Also, you will be guided by EducationUSA Advisers through regular seminars to navigate your desired College Application process.

The first thing they do is an application boot camp, then they conduct seminars  throughout the year on;

 

  • Researching your options

 

  • Funding your studies

 

  • Completing your application

 

  • How to write a personal statement or college essay

 

  • Applying for a student visa and

 

  • Preparing for departure.

 

Besides, they also provide free membership to the US Educational Advising Center for you. However, OFP expects a sincere commitment from you by giving back your energy and time to the program and your communities and to be the best you can be.

Eligibility Requirements

For you to benefit from the OFP you must:

 

  • Have completed your Online application form.

 

  • Be able to provide your academic results.

 

  • If you are an undergraduate applicant then you must attach your WAEC result (May/June WAEC result only). But, if WAEC results are not available, then you must be currently in SS3.

Note that the WAEC result must be in Word or PDF files only.

 

  • Also, present a scanned copy of your SS1 & 2 end-of-year reports in Word or PDF files only.

 

  • Provide other supporting documentation in Word or PDF files only during the application process.

 

  • Submit a letter of recommendation. The form should be filled out by your teacher or school principal this is to attest to your skill, talent, and character while in school.

 

  • Ultimately, be able to write one essay each from groups A and B. The easy topics will be on your application form.

 

Note that you should not include a basic testimonial that does not talk about your individual. Likewise, you should note that you are NOT eligible to apply if you have already started a University education.

 

However, if you are a graduate for you to be eligible for selection in the OFP then you must:

 

  • Have completed your application form Online.

 

  • Be able to provide a copy of your university transcript if available. This must be in PDF files only.

 

  • Be able to submit a copy of your Statement of Result/Degree in PDF files only.

 

  • Also, be able to submit a detailed Academic Curriculum Vitae (PDF files only)

 

  • Give a scanned copy of any supplementary certificates of achievement in PDF files only.

 

  • Yet, submit a copy of the GRE result (This is recommended for Engineering students) PDF files only.

 

  • Provide full details of your lecturer or Head of Department.

 

  • Write 2 essays. 1 each from groups A and B which is not less than 250 words and not more than 300 word count. The easy topics will be on your application form.

 

Note that only first-class students are allowed to apply. Also, preference will be given to applicants who major in STEM.

Application Process
