For the past 70 years, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) of the Japanese Government has been inviting international students to study in Japan at state expense. The aim of the scholarship is to help talented individuals bring their academic dreams to reality.
Types of MEXT Scholarship
The MEXT Scholarship offers seven types of programs for all interested persons.
The programs are:
- Research students program
- Teacher training students program
- Undergraduate students program
- Japanese Studies students program
- College of Technology student program
- Specialized training college students program and
- Young Leaders Program (YLP) students program.
1. Research Students MEXT Scholarship Program
The research students program is one of the programs offered by the MEXT Scholarship you can benefit from. However, you must meet the following criteria before you can be considered. You must be:
- A graduate from an accredited university or prospective graduate. If not you must have completed 16 years of schooling.
- Recommended both by the embassy and the university.
- Ready to major in the field of specialty at a graduate school.
- Willing to take ¥143,000~145,000 per month for the scholarship.
- Prepared for the preliminary training of Japanese and so on. However, this is for only those who need it.
- Ready to spend 2 years at most for irregular courses. But for regular courses: standard school year (when necessary, 6 months preliminary education will be added). Nevertheless, the course duration depends on each school’s quota.
- Under 35 years of age.
Yet, you must pass Japanese and English examinations for embassy recommendation.
2. Teacher Training Students MEXT Scholarship Program
Before you can benefit from the teacher training student program you must be:
- Recommended by the embassy. However, you do not need a recommendation from the university.
- Have completed an undergraduate study.
- Willing to dedicate 6 months to 1 year for the program including Japanese language education.
- Ready to take ¥143,000~145,000 per month for the scholarship.
- Under 35 years of age.
- A graduate of a college or teacher training college.
- An experienced teacher with at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary, or teacher training college in your country.
Note that you will not be considered for the scholarship if you are a teacher at a college or university currently in active service. Ultimately, you must pass Japanese and English examinations for embassy recommendation.
3. Undergraduate Students Program
If you want to benefit from the Undergraduate Students MEXT Scholarship program then you must:
- Be recommended by both the embassy and the university.
- You must be ready to spend 5 years including Japanese language training. But 7 years in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary science.
- Ready to accept a Scholarship of ¥117,000 per month.
- Ready to spend 1 year at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Osaka University for preliminary training in Japanese.
- At least 17 and under 25 years of age and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school.
Still, you must pass Japanese, English, mathematics, and science examinations for embassy recommendation.
4. Japanese Studies Students Program
Before you can benefit from the Japanese studies students program you must be:
- Recommended by the embassy and the university.
- Ready to dedicate a year to the program. However, you do not need preliminary training in Japanese.
- 18 to 30 years of age.
- Enrolled as an undergraduate student in faculties or schools that major in Japanese language or Japanese culture in a university outside Japan at the time when you come to Japan.
- Enroll in the home institution at the time when you return to your home country.
- Willingly to accept ¥117,000 monthly.
Ultimately, you must pass the Japanese examination for embassy recommendation.
Note that you will be exposed to Special training in the Japanese language or culture during the program.
5. College Of Technology Student Program
If you wish to be a scholar at the College of Technology student program MEXT Scholarship then you need a recommendation from the embassy and the college of technology.
The duration of the program is 4 years which includes Japanese language training (4 years and 6 months for merchant marine studies). Also, you will spend 1 year at the JASSO Tokyo Japanese Language Education Center for the preliminary training in Japanese.
Ultimately, you will be paid ¥117,000 monthly. In addition, you must be:
- At least 17 and under 25 years of age.
- Have completed school education comparable to a high school or a minimum of 11 years beginning in primary school) education.
Regardless, you must pass Japanese, English, mathematics, and physics or chemistry examinations to be recommended by the embassy.
6. Specialized Training College Students Program
The specialized Training college students program of the MEXT Scholarship does not require you to be recommended by the University. But you must pass Japanese, English, and mathematics examinations for you to be recommended by the embassy.
The program is a 3-year program including Japanese language training where you will spend 1 year at the Bunka Institute of Language, JASSO Osaka Japanese Language Education Center for the preliminary training in Japanese.
However, you can only study specialized courses in this program.
Furthermore, you must be:
- At least 17 and under 25 years of age
- Have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed a school education comparable to a Japanese high school.
7. Young Leaders Program (YLP) Students Program.
To be considered for the young leaders program you must:
- Have completed an undergraduate course because you can only study master courses here.
- Be under 40 years of age
- Ready to take ¥242,000 per month
The good thing about this program is that you do not require any recommendation either from the embassy or the university.
How to Apply for the MEXT Scholarship 2024
You should apply for the MEXT 2025 scholarship through the Japanese embassies, consulate-generals abroad, or Japanese universities.
